Do you want to appear more youthful without looking like you’ve had any work done? If, the answer is yes then continue to read on. The chances are that Sculptra Aesthetic is the perfect dermal filler for you.

Dermal fillers, also known as soft tissue fillers, are medical device implants approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Today, these types of cosmetic injections are arguably one of the biggest trends in plastic surgery, and among the most popular is Sculptra.
What is Sculptra?

Polylactic acid (PLA) acts as the main ingredient of Sculptra, a material that is gradually and naturally absorbed by the human body. For nearly three decades, PLA has been a significant component of several surgical products, including dissolvable stitches.

PLA is different than most dermal fillers in a sense that it comes from renewable resources like corn starch or sugar cane. The synthetic substance replicates a natural derivative created by the muscles during physical activity. This dermal filler is also biocompatible, meaning it cannot harm the body.

Not all injectable implants are equal in formulation and function. Some target specific areas of the face and produce different effects. In the case of Sculptra, it fills in the hollows , fine lines and wrinkles on the face, and improves facial volume loss associated with aging.

How does Sculptra fill in facial lines and wrinkles?

Sculptra does more than diminish fine lines and wrinkles. It also restores the definition of the face by filling in hollow structures, including the sunken appearance of the temples and cheeks, as well as the loss of jaw definition. The injectable filler is administered under the fat of the skin (not into) which stimulates the body to produce collagen — an underlying cause of facial aging. This boost of collagen happens over the course of several months.

That’s right! The PLA in Sculptra stimulates your body to produce collagen. We call this effect a biostimulatory effect and Sculptra is one of the few fillers that can get your body working to make you look younger! It’s also very natural as it is your own collagen that develops into improving the way you look.

Here is a breakdown of how the dermal filler can smoothen your facial volume:

● First, once injected, the microscopic PLA fibers in Sculptra will induce a mild inflammatory reaction under the skin.

● Second, the substance begins triggering the formation of new collagen.

● Last, the collagen production will gradually increase, thus, making the treatment’s volume-enhancing results apparent in roughly six to ten weeks.

One of the positive effects of choosing Sculptra as your dermal filler include an improvement in your overall facial skin thickness and volume, leading to a healthier and more youthful appearance. In fact, Sculptra has become known as the “liquid facelift” for its impressive results.

The Pre-Treatment Process

Before undergoing the injectable treatment, a consultation is a must to discuss your goals and needs. At Guerra Plastic Surgery Center, Sculptra Aesthetic is administered on an outpatient basis at our facilities in Scottsdale and Phoenix. We will first determine the precise points of injection and mark them on your face. We also recommend the application of a topical anesthetic, which minimizes any discomfort during the procedure.

Because Sculptra is synthetic, biocompatible, and made from a natural substance already present in your body (lactic acid), the treatment is generally safe. However, it is crucial to disclose your complete medical history during the initial consultation, including the use of any medication such as aspirin since it possesses countering effects. It is also advisable to abstain from consuming alcoholic beverages in the days leading up to treatment.

The Injection Procedure

Step 1: Before injecting the volume-filling treatment, Sculptra® suspension is diluted with lidocaine to reduce any discomfort. This is administered under the skin using a very fine-gauge syringe.

Step 2: A significant difference between Sculptra injectable and other dermal fillers is that it is evenly placed under a facial defect, in contrast to the “spot placement” of other fillers under a skin wrinkle.

Step 3: Immediately after treatment, the injected areas are gently massaged to distribute the Sculptra® suspension throughout the targeted facial features. The light pressure also helps prevent the unwanted formation of nodules under the skin.

As a general rule, patients above 40 years old are likely to require more injections to see a drastic change. There are two reasons for this: (1) The younger you are, the better your body is at producing collagen; (2) The older you are, the more volume you have lost, thus, the need for more injections.

Lasting Results

Your facial lines, wrinkles, and hollows will appear much fuller immediately after treatment due to the water concentrate found in the Sculptra injection (microparticles are suspended in sterile water for injection). Nonetheless, it is temporary and will recede after 24 hours. In comparison to other injectables, the real effects of Sculptra Aesthetic manifest longer, stretching as far as several months. And unlike the results of Restylane®, the longeval effects of Sculptra may last for up to two years and beyond.

Are there any side effects?

As with most cosmetic procedures, the injection sites are prone to tenderness, swelling, redness, bruising, bleeding, itching, lump formation, and pain. Application of cold compress or ice packs over the area will help alleviate such symptoms. Most patients experience minimal or no downtime after the procedure, meaning they had no problem returning to their everyday activities.

Are you a good candidate for this procedure?

Good health is the utmost requirement for any cosmetic procedure. In general, almost everyone is a suitable candidate for Sculptra® Aesthetic. The probability of developing an allergic reaction is low, primarily because lactic acid is a biologically inert substance in the human body. However, patients who suffer from skin infections, take anti-inflammatory medications, and have weak immune systems should consult with a doctor to ensure that they are a probable candidate for all injectable treatments. Additionally, in order for your body to produce adequate amounts of collagen, it must have good nutrition and you should avoid tobacco at all costs!

Can Sculptra® Aesthetic be used elsewhere in the body?

Yes! Sculptra is an extremely versatile dermal filler which can be used in other parts of the body needing volume and reshaping without surgery. Lifting and volumization with Sculptra can be restored in a natural and non-surgical manner. The second most popular place to inject Sculptra is the buttocks. With the right amount of Sculptra both lifting and volume enhancement can be achieved in healthy patients which are good candidates. Knees, breasts, stretch marks, and arms are other popular locations to inject Sculptra as well.
