Cosmetic surgery is at an all-time high. In 2018 alone, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reported nearly 18 million people received surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures in the U.S. Many things can drive people to go under the knife, from saggy breasts to belly bulges. If you’re thinking of doing the same, it’s best to weigh in whether it’s proper to proceed or not. Ask yourself: Is it time to welcome change, or is it better to embrace the raw, beautiful you? Here’s how you can draw the line.

Whether it’s best to accept your flaws or improve them through cosmetic surgery is a matter that depends on many factors. You may find out which one’s better by considering the following:
Try to lay down your reasons why you want to get surgery. This way, you can thoroughly view your concerns and inclinations. Once done, share your realizations with your plastic surgeon. He will provide you with the best options available to suit your needs. Remember that not all cosmetic problems require surgery. Some may only need an allowance of time to heal and recover. Others may call for non-surgical procedures, such as unwanted lines and wrinkles. And, finally, certain bodily flaws only need a bit of acceptance.
Be very honest with yourself. To whom do you associate your reason for wanting to go under the knife? The reason must come naturally from yourself. If you’re thinking of getting plastic surgery to keep up with the standards of others, you’ll most certainly regret the decision later on when you come across someone who also follows another standard of beauty. Make sure that it’s you who craves that change, not someone else.
Skillful and experienced plastic surgeons can significantly improve your appearance. But they are not gods or magicians. Be sure to have realistic expectations. Plastic surgeries can help improve one’s self-esteem and body image, but they are not the cure to anxiety, depression, or body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Likewise, while a new, improved look can open new opportunities, it isn’t a ticket to secured employment or a relationship. Your plastic surgeon will guide you on what you can reasonably lookout for and how to keep your expectations in check.
Plastic surgeries aren’t made for everyone. Certain qualifications make up a good candidate, and these qualifications may even vary according to the type of procedure you’ll take. Common requirements include:
Meeting these qualifications is a must, especially since the success of your plastic surgery depends on these factors. If you’re a minor or have existing conditions, such as high blood or diabetes, you cannot simply go to the surgeon’s office and apply for plastic surgery.
Plastic surgeries, like all other surgeries, carry risks. Beyond the possibility of an unpleasant result, infections, scarring, bleeding, and permanent numbness due to nerve damage are also possible. Make sure to talk with a board-certified plastic surgeon with a commendable background. Ask what risks and complications may arise due to the procedure. Knowing all these will help you decide whether it’s worth going under the knife or not.
Costs are another cause of concern. While it’s tempting to grab the lowest breast lift offer or the cheapest tummy tuck service around, unusually low-priced plastic surgery procedures are often a red flag. It’s best to make sure you can finance quality and safe service from a professional and licensed plastic surgeon.
Body insecurities come in many forms, and they may interfere with a person’s day-to-day life. Choosing an outfit, for instance, becomes a drag when we have so much we want to cover up. Even taking pictures turns troublesome when we only feel comfortable at a particular angle.
A person can achieve their desired appearance, restore their youthful appeal, and even improve their mental health through plastic surgery. Consequently, this will translate to a more active and carefree lifestyle. But all these are true only in cases where plastic surgery suits the individual’s condition. Before you give in to your daydreams, weigh in your options. How we deal with our bodies are very personal matters. Make sure that your decision will benefit you the most.
